Americans Say the Darndest Things

All I can say is it's a damned good thing that I have a sense of humor.

Here are some of the French language bloopers I've made, loud and proud, as I boldly go where I've never gone before en français.

"She's forty years old and dust."

"I'd love to see the performance of the Nutbreaker at the Opera Garnier this Christmas."

"It's an apartment with beautiful old exposed whores."

"He was so mad, he farted the maps."

"She was a lesbian for the government during the war."

"Sarkozy is one of the only French politicians who isn't a hoax, right?"

"In order to get a job, you have to have a race track, I think, especially for Americans."

And these are just the ones I'm admitting to.

LOL, I think I've seen that apartment!

Not to spoil the joke, but here's what I should have said:

1. des poussieres, which means "and then some"

2. Casse-Noisette, not Casse-Noix

3. poutres are beams; putes are of ill-repute

4.peter les plombs means to blow a fuse, pop a gasket

5. l'espionne. I've got to work on the enunciation

6. enarque (graduate of ENA). NOT arnaque

7. piston, not piste

HILARIOUS !

Some of the bloopers I've made myself:

"Je n'arrive pas à me remettre à cause du décalage horreur."

"Qui aime bien, chatouille bien."

;-)

Carlene,
Yeah, bloopers are the best when they have valid second meanings. I can conjure up images of that apartment!

JC: I love yours!!

Jet lag is horrible, so I like your version better..

And a lot of tickling goes on in the C household, I guess!

Laff out loud funny! Especially in light of your post yesterday.
I think you need to rehearse a LOT, before you take on that waiter.

When it comes to aimer I think chatouiller is preferable to chatier. Unless, of course, you're into that sort of thing, and who isn't?

GLS: well, yes, but of course this is advanced French. The more I acquire new with-it lingo, the more I evolve into Madame Malaprop.

Jay: yes, and the interesting thing about the adage 'qui aime bien chatie bien' is that it really means that you can judge how kind a person is by how he or she treats his family (and pets). But I do like chatouille as a substitute!

The other night, I mixed together salut and ciao by accident and it came out salaud. So instead of saying goodbye to my friend, I blurted out loud "Asshole" and my friends got a good laugh out of it!

Oh Chanter, I told your "salaud" story at lunch today! That's a keeper.
