Well, it had to happen sooner or later. But this is sooner.
After a busy day out and about in lovely Paree, I arrived home to find the following anonymous comment on my blog, in reference to My Kingdom for a Torch:
About Hubert, it's not about being well-educated or democratic, but respect and sensitivity to another's culture. Your giggling was ignorant and rude. Maybe it's time for some sensitivity training , or at least some behavior changes. Or maybe more doors closing! It's time for me to stop reading your blog.
Gee, I just love it when people have the courage of their convictions. Perhaps someone needs to learn a bit more blog etiquette.
So, three weeks after I bravely (for me) started having comments on my blog, I am unfortunately going to stop allowing anonymous comments. Don't worry, you can still use an alias. I'm not moderating comments -- yet.
Anyway, adieu, dear Anonymous, merci for your view. We would say we'll miss you -- if we knew who you were!

Yes, you were probably rude, but I still beleive if that french guy was so much into you, he should have accept and tolerate your apologies. It wasn't end of the world comment from you.
I am hungarian and we hungarians are even harder than french people long time ago we were know all around europe as the MAD HUNGARIAN -but we can at least forgive for one another.
I am sorry for you again, maybe you should try out a nice noble hungarian guy.
Polly, as Francophile as you are, you're still a thoroughly modern Millie, and you don't need some anachronistic catho royaliste! I would have reacted with disbelief and probably guffawed. Find yourself a nice, smart républicain like I did. That's my advice!
I just stopped allowing anonymous comments for that very reason - I don't mind when people disagree with me or write rude things, but I can't stand that they don't at least have the guts to leave their name and "own" their comments!!
I had to go back to find out what post I'd missed reading and I'm glad I did 'cause it gave me a good laugh. More honestly, a guffaw, followed by a lot of chuckling. Sorry, I just can't see rudeness in your response at all -- it was involuntary and honest, and, come on, if the fellow has never examined the possible peculiarity of trotting off annually to a religious service commemorating a rather problematic aristocratic figure from several hundred years back, well. . . You'd have to be rather thoroughly solipsistic not to get that there might be a considerable bunch of us out here who find it amusing!
Yikes, hurt feelings all around. The French/American thing can be hard to navigate, but here's the thing---you meant well, you learned from your miscues, and you apologized. That's all one can do. You and Hubert and Anon are better off without each other. Bon courage.
Dear Polly,
Have been reading your blog for the past 6 months or so and am so enjoying it! I have to say that I was delighted to read your blog post about Hubert and thought it was a perfect example of a lost-in-translation moment. Of course American and French cultures have differences and this was just one of which you were not aware. And I do not think you were rude at all - you just felt free and comfortable enough to say what you were thinking (plus, the flirting aspect of the joke). Anyways, Hubert took it way seriously. You were not rude. The anonymous guy or girl is stupid. Don't worry and keep writing! You blog makes me feel like I'm in Paris again (and I am so far from it :-().
Don't let it bother you. Remember you had the courage to tell the world about your mistake. I'll still read your blog, especially since you now have comments.
Thanks, everyone!
I was actually more amused by the comment. My first reaction was "If a tree falls in a forest.." ergo, if a lurker stops reading, um, who notices?
I mostly was tickled by the irony of being anonymously blasted as "insensitive" and "rude"...
Well, it just doesn't get any better!
I'm still wondering why it was rude to giggle- he was going to a mass in honor of Louis XVI- it's giggle worthy. Of course an anonymous reader just commented that my blog was silliest expat blogs they've ever read and I sound like I'm 12 which might explain it.
Thanks for allowing comments- I love your blog!!!
Ohhhhh myyyyyyy....
Meilleurs voeux!!
