Bonjour, Charleston!

A hearty bonjour to readers in Charleston, South Carolina (including my beautiful daughter).

I thought you'd like to know that your fair city was immortalized on French TV this evening. Yes, you looked très chic, which is why Le Grand Journal on Canal+ showed a clip of Charleston, bien sûr. On the other hand, they showed the mishap at the fashion show during Fashion Week. Ouch.

I hope the lovely mannequin in the yellow dress is recovering okay; please know that you were in excellent company; other honored guests were Jody Foster and Jean Sarkozy (son of President Nicolas Sarkozy).

I've just seen it on Canal Plus too (Le Petit Journal is just the best piece of TV, not only in France, but all over the world I think)...

I wanna say it was funny, but actually, I can't help being concerned (for about half a second) when somebody makes such a fall...

I agree, David. Yann Barthes is incredible. I like le Petit and le Grand Journal -- always on the cutting edge. And wasn't Jody Foster's French impressive? I had no idea she was so fluent.

I happened to see this too while zapping channels. It sure is very funny!
Jody Foster went to the Lycée français of Los Angeles and spent a whole year living in Paris with her Mom while she was a teenager. She even recorded a song with Claude François (who you MUST have heard about, Polly, since we celebrated last March the 30th anniversary of his death!)

Actually, Le Grand Journal is the only thing I watch on TV (I'm lying, I also watch L'Edition Speciale when I can (and a few things on the week-end (all on Canal Plus, my TV has only one channel... don't have satellite and I removed the other basic channels. ;-) ).

And I don't want to sound blasé, but I stopped being impressed by Jodie Foster's French about 15 years ago... ;-) But yeah, the first time I heard her speak French, I was indeed very impressed (since then, I must admit that I have met American people that had a better French than hers... namely two of my professors).

I think what's impressive about Jodie Foster's French is how she has maintained it all these years, when she must not have very many opportunities to use it anymore... I think that's what blows my mind! I've read loads of articles over the years in the French media about how wonderful her French is, and it sometimes depresses me, given the fact that she's a gifted, incredible actress AND perfectly bilingual in French

But like David, I try to shrug my shoulders and feel blasé about it -- after all, her French can't still be THAT good anymore, now can it?! ;-)
