Marcel, the French Lover

Marcel has a mustache and wears a beret.

Marcel sports a blue-and white débardeur and a neck kerchief.

Marcel is ... your French Lover?

Actually, Marcel is a clever reusable nylon shopping bag that I spotted today at La Grande Epicerie at Le Bon Marché.

At €15, Marcel may be a bargain lover, but he's an expensive grocery bag.

baggu actually has some nifty blue & white striped ones (marinier français) for around $8. 15E is highway robbery!

I've seen some "designer" reusable bags for even more here in the states. Cute bag...however perhaps I'm void of fashion but I'll use the standard green and blue variety found at our local supermarket. They are functional and cheap, usually around $1-$2 each.

Hi Polly,

I use a canvas tote bag. It comes in several sizes and colors. The best thing about it..it can go in the washer! No plastic or paper for me.

Polly,

I love your blog, I love Marcel, I love the headless dolls and I love the fact that you love le quatorzieme. I'm going to blogroll you! Hope that's okay...

Warm wishes

Hello Polly-vous francais,

My friend l'Epicurienne tipped me off about your blog vachement cool. I spent two weeks in Paris in May and I cannot believe I missed le guillotineur! I would have freaked out with joy in front of so much bizarrerie!
Quant au shopping bag, un marcel is a French term describing a sleeveless shirt. I think it originated from the boxer Marcel Cerdan cutting the sleeves from his shirts so that he would sweat less.
Anyway, I think that your blog is tres chouette and I'll visit again tres bientot. Merci de m'avoir bien fait rigoler!

Bonjour all,

The photo doesn't show it very well, but the bag was being marketed as "Marcel, the lover grocery bag."

I use nylon grocery bags, too, but you can get them for about one or two euros at the check-out counters of regular grocery stores.

Anway, a clever marketing ploy -- a good souvenir to take back home -- albeit a bit pricey!

And Epicurienne, of course glad to be on your blog roll. I'll be checking out everyone's blogs when time allows.
