August 1

Ils sont partis en vacances, je crois ...

...and the ones who aren't yet on vacation were all in the RER A on their way to La Défense at approximately eight-thirty this morning.

(How the RATP remains standing room only in the middle of summer is a mystery to me.)

Hi Parisienne,

Wow -- incredible. Maybe the metro was still packed bc it was Friday, and some worker-bees hadn't left yet for vacay. I bet on Monday there'll be plenty of breathing room.

I love Paris in August when it empties out. Free parking etc., not that I have a car.

The Métro was emptier this morning, but the RER is still full. Of course, those clever folks over at the RATP have seriously reduced the number of trains, so...

And we discovered this weekend that parking is NOT free on rue de Rivoli, even on a Saturday in August. I thought the meter maids were all on vacation.

I'm waiting for you to report on the newest summer trend in Paris: fans! The perfect fashion accessory for public transportation on hot, sticky summer days. Most parisiennes like myself are still trying to get the fanning motion down, and I'm not the only one who looks a little silly. I'm just glad to finally be on top of at least one fashion trend, and a useful one, at that. (No, I still don't have a pair of tropeziennes.)

I'll have to check out the parking situation! I thought it was free everywhere in Paris in August. But I have seen a few meter maids around, it's true.

I love fans! Actually I did report on them -- but it was back in April 2007, which was the last time we had any real heat in Paris. Remember last summer... or was that a winter?!

Here's the link to the fan post.

Oh, yeah, I remember that post now. I'll have to work on my fan language, for I hardly want to be sending the wrong message to my fellow passengers on the RER!
