Dear Abby: Should I go to France?

There's always a first time for everything.  Today I wrote to Dear Abby.

No, no, no.  I didn't ask her how to solve any of my dilemmas (what? me worry?) but to commend her for a spot-on response to a college student's quandary.

Dear Abby:
I'm a college freshman, majoring in French but taking other languages as well. I don't know what I want to do with my life, but I know that I love learning languages.  My friend, "Lacey," has offered me the chance to stay with her family in France during our next summer break...
You can read the rest here (after the grandma's grooming query).

I'd been out of the Dear Abby habit for a long time, until recently when I subscribed to our local daily as an implusive gesture of solidarity for the print industry.  (The recycling bin is taking a hit, though, as is my green-er social conscience.)

I whip through the news section (I've already read most of it online), and settle in on local events, comics, Eugenia Last's eerily accurate horoscopes, and then dear Dear Abby.  Cover to cover, about four minutes.  It takes me longer to walk down the hill to fetch it than to actually read the thing.  So I do have a quandary:

Dear Abby:

Should I cancel my newspaper subscription?

I read that Dear Abby yesterday as well and thought the same thing: "GO, you fool!" I mean come on, the comment the writer made about not knowing what she would do with herself while there...pu-leeze....

p.s. I wrote to Abby once, but not asking advice, but to admonish her for suggesting that a woman's 6-year old daughter might need psychoanalysis because she was clumsy. I have been clumsy all my life and as far as I can tell, I don't need therapy!

I don't know about your local paper but the commentary - op/ed section and letters to the editor plus a few other writers make taking our local paper worth it... at least for the time being.

It's hard to believe that that student had to even think twice about such a wonderful offer. Too bad TRES TROUBLEE didn't give an address so that others could volunteer to go if she declines!

BJ, I had the same reaction but wasn't sure if the advice would be "talk with your friends or others who have done this etc etc." I was so glad she gave an unequivocal Go For It!

Harriet,
I agree about the Op-Ed, letters, etc.( And btw for me it's cool to be in a town where Rita Mae Brown is one of the writers of letters to the editor!)

Maybe it's just that I'm a newbie, therefore lacking some of the contex.

But the jury is still out on the print newspaper subsription! Seems so wasteful.

I have often thought about canceling my local paper (which has shrunk a great deal in the past year). I try not to pay too much attention to the news (it all seems to be bad most of the time) and can get whatever of it I want instantly online or via CNN. When I do pick up the paper (which my hubby reads front-to-back each morning), it is to read the comics & Abbey....not much else (except on Fridays when the local "what's going on" listings are covered). So, if it were just me, I'd likely cancel it.

If your local paper has an online version, then perhaps let the subscription go. Our online version doesn't always have the Commentary articles up in a timely manner, but one can follow favorite writers on individual websites. Letters to the Editor are posted online.

However, there's something about having paper in hand that appeals to me. I'm very old fashioned.

With her attitude, she might as well stay home. She could switch her major to Career Ops w/McDonalds.
