My mother and part-Scottish father weren't too keen, either. Given that umbrellas aren't that old, in general usage, it may well be just a matter of space in the average home. A Victorian hallway wasn't complete without some receptacle (complete with drip tray) to stow your (closed) umbrella or walking-stick.Autolycushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17642868944400656922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28165993.post-6657642762895262292013-03-14T14:19:02.415-04:002013-03-14T14:19:02.415-04:00Hi Polly,

And yes, never opening it over your head indoors: bad luck. But in France, wet umbrellas were routinely hung on door handles to dry, and that was such an eye-opener to me.
@ Canedolia, MDR!Polly-Vous Francaishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12667479743723002691noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28165993.post-12435551164239426752013-03-13T14:27:02.997-04:002013-03-13T14:27:02.997-04:00In Scotland, the superstition is that if you open ...In Scotland, the superstition is that if you open an umbrella indoors it brings on the rain.

Needless to say, this theory has been proven correct by countless times by experience!Canedoliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00793959858820555197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28165993.post-7389076775206699532013-03-13T12:25:47.285-04:002013-03-13T12:25:47.285-04:00We always dried our umbrellas open in the house. Most everyone I know has heard of the superstition, but not many actually believe it. Supposedly, if an umbrella is opened in the house, someone will die. A friend of mine swore this actually happened, but I think she just wanted to blame someone or something for the death of her relative.bevgreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14178309808243055117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28165993.post-89126786731799210162013-03-13T09:00:44.852-04:002013-03-13T09:00:44.852-04:00As a native of Louisiana and therefore being raise...As a native of Louisiana and therefore being raised with the influence of French culture, indeed, an umbrella is never to be opened indoors.
