All that glitters isn't goldfish. Or is it?

It's time for a break in the action. Definitely.

And as long as I'm living my life in a fishbowl these days, I figured it was about time to have a Special Someone in my life to share it with. My last Special Someone, alas, is still in Paris, hanging out with a woman named Sofia.

And since companionship-seeking is not the kind of activity I feel comfortable doing on line, I'm heading to town for some action.

Yup, I'm a-goin' to the pet store to buy me a goldfish.

You may remember my tales of Lou-Lou in Paris. I sadly bid her adieu when she was adopted during my final days in Paris by some lovely people. Afterward they emailed me periodic updates as to her health and general happiness. We've lost touch a bit, though. I don't know how Lou-Lou is these days. Or if Lou-Lou is these days.

But to paraphrase Camus, il faut imaginer Lou-Lou heureux.

Poisson rouge# 1 was Matisse. Poisson rouge #2 was Lou-Lou (named for Louise de Vilmorin).

Poisson rouge # 3 is yet to be named, and I am taking suggestions.

Because you've already had a Lou-Lou (The best name. Ever), I think she should be named Simone, after Simone de Beauvoir.

Hélène (as in Cixous)

How about Pepper? or Poivre? or poivron rouge?

Oh boy. The selection of goldfish at the pet store was less than stellar. I got the best-looking one of the bunch. And he looks like...Danny DeVito.

LOL @ Danny DeVito.

Danny DeVito might be the best name for a poisson rouge EVER. I vote for Danny.

Je suggère "Cerise" (parce que c'est bon et rouge) ou "Minou" par pure provocation féline...

I think I've narrowed it down to 2 finalists: Hugo (because the thing does look a bit like Quasimodo) and Dany le Rouge.

Hey Marie-Aurore! Thanks for checking in.

You know, I love reading blogs on both sides of the Atlantic -- Americans or Anglos trying to figure out French life, and also French expat blogs trying to make sense of us Americans.

To me it's all about the joy, laughter, or frustration of discovering new French/American cultural differences. Including the WTF and OMG moments...

A never-ending stream, it seems.

I wish I'd gotten here soon enough to adopt Lou Lou!

Miss you now that we're back in a Polly-less Paris. Any visits planned?

Danny DeVito! HAHA! What about Cleo, after the little fish in Pinocchio?

Polly-Vous Francais said...

Hi Shelli & Gene! Hope you're having a blast in Paris. How can you, without me?

S. Shoemaker, Cleo would be a great name, but we already had a cat named Cleo, whom we don't remember with huge fondness (click on the story above about Lou-Lou, Matisse and the other family pets.)

Our earliest goldfish, named by the kids, had the oh-so-fitting names of Fishy and Swimmy.

I am leaning toward Dany, but Hugo would go along with the other H's in my life: my kids and Hubert the Hippo.)

Goldfish are SO hard to photograph, but once I can, I'll snap a pic and you will all see that he looks like Danny DeVito!

Beauregard. My childhood goldfish who grew the most enormous tail and was truly beau.

I am so glad I found your blog... reading your anecdotes have reminded me of my fond times living in Paris- which I am now reliving again through rose colored glasses! xo

LouLou is the name of our cat, who tortures her dog siblings Caesar and Sophie. I wait to see the photo of your Danny DeVito lookalike with fins. Cousteau, now that's what I would name a fish.

I always wanted a pet fish just so I could name him Salmon Rushdie.

My sister named her fish after Adam Gopnik's son's imaginary friend: Charlie Ravioli. It, however, was eaten by his its bowl mate. Since I now have a goldfish, I have named it Charles in order to honor of the deceased Charlie Ravioli. But because I'm a francophile and love late 19th century Paris, I named my fish "Charles Rupert." For your fish, I highly recommend a compound name as well, if he isn't named by now.
