The Color Purple

Do you remember that classic scene in The Graduate, where Mr. Maguire corners Benjamin to tell him the secret to success? "I just want to say one word to you. Are you listening?"

Well this season, The Word isn't "plastics."

It's, uh, "prune."

Okay, well maybe plum or purple in English. But hints of the color purple are the It fashion word this fall in Paris. I've inadvertently made the rounds of many of the boutiques pre-rentree, and apparently if you aren't tuned to prune you just aren't anywhere.

No total-purple outfits, please. No matching purple tops and bottoms. Just a hint. One smidgen, one item.

Thus spoke the fashion gods.

My daughter just bought and wore a pair of purple pants. She will be so pleased to know that she is trés chic by Paris standards!

Meilleurs voeux!!

Cecile -- you're the chic fashion lady, so you know best! But I saw, for example, a purple dress with a little black vest over it. Adorable. Also depends on the color of the purple, maybe.

In my mind, though, one wouldn't want to wear purple shoes with the purple dress, if you catch my drift. No matchy-matchy. But you already knew that!

My acquisition was a pair of prune ballerina flats to add some "punch" to the otherwise ho-hum standard jeans or all-black outfit. I'm still the proverbial fashion flop, but I'll keep trying.

And a French friend just bought some purple converse hi-tops. That'll be zingy.
